I’m looking for some advice on a problem that’s come up recently with my agility dog. He’s a 3-year-old Border Collie training in agility for about 1.5 years. Up until a few weeks ago, he was very confident on all contact obstacles, especially the A-frame. However, after a slightly bad landing where he slipped off the descending side (no injury, just startled), he’s now started refusing or hesitating every time we approach it. In training, he’ll sometimes stop at the base, circle away, or try to take an alternative obstacle instead. If I push him a bit, he’ll go up but very slowly and cautiously, and his usual drive is completely gone on that element. Everything else in his agility work is still solid—tunnels, jumps, weave poles—no issues there. I’ve tried going back to basics with food rewards on a lowered frame and making it very positive again, but progress is slow and inconsistent. Has anyone dealt with a sudden confidence drop like this on the A-frame? Would you recommend more decompression work, or a structured retraining plan from scratch? Also wondering if I should just take a full break from the obstacle for a while. Any tips would be really appreciated. Sprunki Game |
